India to make fresh efforts for extradition of Kim Davy

India has decided to make fresh efforts for the extradition of Kim Davy, the prime accused in the Purulia arms drop case, after a Danish court turned down a plea for sending him here to face trial in the 17-year-old case. The decision was taken after Union Home Secretary R K Singh discussed the issue of extradition of Kim Davy to India with Indian Ambassador to Denmark Ashok Attri last week.

India on Wednesday termed as "disappointing" a Denmark court's refusal to allow the extradition of Purulia arms drop case mastermind Kim Davy and strongly rejected the argument that prisoners are subjected to torture in India. "The Kim Davy verdict is very disappointing. We reject the argument that prisoners are subjected to torture or that human rights of the accused will be violated," said Home Minister P Chidambaram.

A British spy turned arms dealer has told a Copenhagen court that Danish national Kim Davy alias Neils Holck, the prime accused in the 1995 Purulia arms drop case, would not survive if he is extradited and forced to stand trial in India. Giving evidence in the extradition hearing of Davy, Peter Bleach, who was arrested over the incident, told the court how he was beaten and humiliated while serving a life sentence in India. Bleach was released in February 2004.

The prime accused in the infamous Purulia arms-dropping case, Kim Davy, is likely to be extradited from Denmark by July-end and will serve his prison term in India if proven guilty. Government sources said Denmark has informed authorities here that the 47-year-old Davy, alias Niels Holck, will be extradited within next two to three months following completion of the legal process and after India replies to certain queries of the Nordic country.
